Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God...Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth." (Matthew 5:1-12)
To provide educational, recreational, social and therapeutic programs for the intellectually/physically challenged individuals in a safe and secure environment at Mary Queen Church Parish Center, to enhance their quality of life and show case their capabilities within the community.
Special Friends, Inc. a United Way funded agency, began in 1982 and now embraces about 55 participants within our communities who have varying degrees of physical and mental disabilities, who benefit from interaction in a non-threatening and nurturing environment overseen by trained staff members, volunteers and parents. Every Monday night they come together as a team to improve their physical fitness, social skills, team spirit, sportsmanship, fine motor skills through arts and crafts, and gross motor skills through specially designed games, like bunco and beanbag baseball. They broaden their horizons through events such as special guest speakers (police and fire department) and various entertainers. They also have fun participating in community events such as bowling, Special Olympics, Mardi Gras, Fourth of July parade, Christmas hay ride and swim party. The reading and writing program provides them with educational growth, enhances their communication and life skills. These programs also benefit the family members by providing them with friendships, support and networking, especially as part of our family night events.
